Title: The History of Psychometric Computing Author: Jan de Leeuw Affiliation: Retired, not finished Abstract: In this talk I review the history of computing in psychometrics, using factor analysis and multidimensional scaling as the main families of techniques guiding the discussion. Hardware, languages, implementations, and algorithms are reviewed. I start this history shortly before 1940, at the birth of Psychometrika and the death of Karl Pearson, and end it with the irresistible advent of the interpreted languages.
